WHO WE ARE...

“Just a bunch of guys having a kick about....”

They started off as just a bunch of young guys getting together on a week night for a kick about. Then they started talking about starting a team. And before they knew it, they had a team. And before long, the team had a name, and had joined a league, and had a manager, and had a sponsor, and had their own web site, and fans as far south as Nottingham, and all this before a ball was even kicked in anger. What had they started? Could they deliver. Watch this space. All will be revealed as the league campaign progresses. In the meantime, Click here to read one players version of how it all began. WHO WE REALLY ARE...
AFC Ravenscraig (The Ravens) are a newly formed amateur football team from Lanarkshire. We play in The Strathclyde Saturday Morning Amateur Football League. 2005/06 is AFC Ravenscraig’s second season and following promotion and a cup semi final in our debut year we now play in Division Two. The league has three divisions and is one of a number of amateur league affiliated to the Scottish Amateur Football Association(SAFA).To learn more about the Saturday Morning League, and about SAFA, click on the hyperlinks. WHY RAVENSCRAIG?
Our players are drawn from throughout Lanarkshire, from towns like Motherwell, Wishaw, Hamilton, Blantyre and Coatbridge. We take our name from the famous steelworks that once dominated the Lanarkshire skyline and economy. The steelworks closed in 1992 and the 1,000 acre site was then cleared of any remnants of its steelmaking past. Today, Ravenscraig is one of the largest redevelopment sites in Europe, and whole new town is about to emerge on the former steelworks site. That new town, like our football team, will be called Ravenscraig. To see photos of the old Ravenscraig and learn more about Ravenscraig past click here.
